Over the last few years I’ve made a huge effort to buy more sustainable and eco friendly products. Now I’m learning to expand and diversify where I shop even more by being more aware of black owned businesses. I think it’s important to know the places you shop and where you’re putting your money / the ethics of the company. So here are some of my favorite sustainable black owned brands below. Feel free to share any others that you know of below in the comments.
I’ve been using this brand for a few years since they use clean, naturally-derived ingredients. I’m obsessed with their heat hair protectors. I’m always super careful with Sulfates since this can cause hair loss, this brand uses no sulfates in any of their products! I also love their repair hair creams to help from heat damage. They make products for all hair types, my favorites being Farewell Frizz – blow dry perfection & heat protectant crème, for $24.
-Cruelty Free: NO Harsh Sulfates, NO Silicones, NO Paraben, NO Phthalates, NO DEA, and NO Artificial Dyes.
I was so excited when I found this brand! It’s a nude lingerie line made from fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles… pretty awesome! It’s also all made in Los Angeles, CA. The brand was made when the founder, Shobha Philips, was having trouble finding “nude” underwear that matched her brown skin tone. My favorite is their nude Cutout Bralette.
3. BLK + GRN
This is a marketplace of green products by black business owners. The brands are chosen by black health experts, making sure each item is an all-natural product. The site makes shopping ethically + sustainably easy! You can get everything from bath + body, menstrual care, home, and hair care. Everything is toxic free, plant based, and cruelty free!
4. PUR Home
Many cleaning products contain harmful chemicals which lead to negative health effects… I was excited when I found this eco-friendly brand, PUR Home! They have every cleaning supply you’ll need for your home. One of my favorite products is the Laundry Detergent which is made of organic and raw ingredients. Their products are plant-based, biodegradable, non toxic, and all natural!
5. Enbois Originals
I’m always careful with jewelry, especially with fast fashion which tends to use toxic materials. Enbois Originals uses high quality natural materials to make their jewelry and accessories. It’s sourced from some of the most renewable and sustainable materials. It’s also made in the USA and every purchase contributes to reforestation efforts!
6. Omi Woods
Another jewelry brand I love is Omi Woods. Each piece is individually and ethically handmade. They use fair trade African gold and globally sourced conflict free fine metals. One of my favorite parts of this company is how they source their gold and treat the miners. Their gold is sourced from small scale artisanal mines which support the miners and their communities. They pay the miners a fair wage… contributing to improved health care, education, safety and living conditions.
7. Shea Moisture
This is one of my favorite hair brands that I’ve been using for a few years. It’s tough to find shampoos and conditioners that don’t include harmful ingredients. One of my favorite products is their 100% virgin coconut oil leave in treatment. It’s a leave in conditioner but also protects from heat damage. This brands sells everything from bath body, and hair. They have products for women, men, and babies + kids.
– NO Parabens, NO Phthalates, NO Mineral Oil, NO Petroleum, and NO Formaldehyde.
